The Captain and the Sea
03:12
|
|||
The captain says, “Don’t rock the boat, don’t rock the boat”
The Bering Sea, the great north sea, is difficult to navigate
And she just smiles, she just smiles, because she knows she has the captain beat
And the captain sighs, the captain sighs, as a swell washes him out to sea
You can sail the whole world wide
And not find a love as pure as mine
The people of the sea
We still believe, we still believe
And ice floats by, icebergs float by, but the captain is too cold to care
And the Leviathan, the great Leviathan, comes and swallows the captain whole
After three long days, three long days, he spits him back onto her shores
And she stands there with arms like tentacles longing to hold him once again
You can sail the whole world wide
And not find a love as pure as mine
The people of the sea
We still believe, we still believe

The Climber
03:11
|
|||
I’m gonna climb Mt. Katahdin with no shoes on
I’m gonna climb Mt. Katahdin with no shoes on
When I reach the top, I hope all my sins are gone
I’m gonna climb Mt. Katahdin with no shoes on
I’m gonna climb Mt. Washington on my knees
I’m gonna climb Mt. Washington on my knees
When I reach the top, I hope I’ve paid the Devil’s fees
I’m gonna climb Mt. Washington on my knees
I’m gonna climb Mt. Mansfield carrying a heavy stone
I’m gonna climb Mt. Mansfield carrying a heavy stone
When I reach the top, I hope I’m still not alone
I’m gonna climb Mt. Mansfield carrying a heavy stone
There is no peak in Rhode Island worthy of this climb
There is no peak in Connecticut either worthy of this climb
When I get up to Heaven I don’t want to stand in a long line
There is no peak worthy of this climb
I’m gonna climb Mt. Greylock in my home state
I’m gonna climb Mt. Greylock in my home state
But when I reach the top, I hope it’s not too late
I’m gonna climb Mt. Greylock in my home state
I’m gonna climb Mt. Katahdin with no shoes on
I’m gonna climb Mt. Katahdin with no shoes on
When I reach the top, it will be the end of all my songs
When I climb Mt. Katahdin with no shoes on

If I had my way, I’d tear this all down
There’s trouble in the promised land
I found a donkey jaw bone in Augusta town
There’s trouble in the promised land
There is trouble, there is trouble, there is trouble
There is trouble, all day long there is trouble
I heard a riddle, answer if you can
There’s trouble in the promised land
The bees made honey in the black bear’s head
There’s trouble in the promised land
There is trouble, there is trouble, there is trouble
There is trouble, all day long there is trouble
Trouble will soon be over, sorrow will be gone
La la la la
Trouble will soon be over, sorrow will be gone
La la la la
The dome of the state house shines green in the sun
There’s trouble in the promised land
If you tie two foxes together, how fast can they run?
To trouble in the promised land
There is trouble, there is trouble, there is trouble
There is trouble, all day long there is trouble
Trouble will soon be over, sorrow will be gone
La la la la
Trouble will soon be over, sorrow will be gone
La la la la

Kinneret
03:35
|
|||
Sittin aboard the old Kinneret
Everyone is taking bets
On who can walk on water first
I’m the captain of this ship
Making sure it don’t tip
There’s a storm that’s a comin in
But no one on this boat can swim
We might all drown
The sun escapes behind the clouds
People are fleeing their home towns
I thought that I could control
The ship with a tilt of my hand
But now, I understand that I was wrong
The waves are crashing over board
Someone is praying to the Lord
Everyone is down on a bended knee
You better put your life jackets on
Before this rugged ship is gone
There’s a man who’s fast asleep
I don’t think he’s earning his keep
Someone go down and wake him up
But how can he be so brave?
We’re the one’s who need to be saved
I thought that I could control
The ship with a tilt of my hand
But now, I understand that I was wrong
When the sleeping man awoke
The storm disappeared into smoke
And the sea grew still and calm
You can now take your life jackets off
I’m throwing this captain’s hat down
I thought that I could control
The ship with a tilt of my hand
But now, I understand that I was wrong

Bangor 5:00 AM
04:52
|
|||
I left Bangor at 5:00 AM
I headed Down East
Bible in my back seat
And a gun still smoking, gun still smoking
I had made a vow with a friend
That we’d always be true
If either of us were unfaithful
We knew what the other would do, you knew what I would do
I pulled in your driveway round 3:00
Rang the bell to your front door
As you stood there before me
A shot rang and you fell to the floor, a shot rang out and you fell to the floor
Now, I run to the sea
To watch the waves crash in
Bury my knees in the sand
And ask to be born again, ask to be born again, ask to be born again, ask to be born again

Dark Is The Night
04:01
|
|||
I grew up next to a lighthouse shining out to sea
Guiding distant boats to safety
But never once did it shine shine on me
Now, I’m just a digger and I roam the coast
I search for things lost long ago
But I never find a thing I need
Dark is the night night night
Cold is the ground ground ground
Where you lay
There’s a cathedral down on 10th street
My mom took me when I was young
Before I could walk away
I keep a hatchet right next to my bed
To fight the dreams lost in my head
And now, that old cathedral is all I can see
Dark is the night night night
Cold is the ground ground ground
Where you lay
I have a sister, she lives in Rockland
Down by the pier all day long she sits
And she stares into the sea
When it is raining I jump on my bike
I burn down Route 1 through the storming night
Running the red lights on that long and lonesome road
Dark is the night night night
Cold is the ground ground ground
Where you lay
I drove to Portland Maine
Through the driving rain
Just to be found
Dark is the night night night
Cold is the ground ground ground
I’m coming home

A Pastor In Maine
04:06
|
|||
I’m a pastor in the town of Springvale Maine of a little church on Main Street, and it’s a Sunday night as I’m sitting on my back porch thinking about the sermon I gave today and how it went over everyone’s heads. As I sit back here, I’m smoking a pack of cigarettes, but nobody in that little church knows I smoke these cigarettes, and it’s a good thing they don’t. My wife doesn’t like it much either.
Do you know the way?
Do you know the way?
I will wait for you
Through these storms
Through these shadows
You will find peace
I hear a knock at my door and Charlie is standing there. Now, Charlie, he’s a town cop, and we used to be good friends back in high school. We’d smoke these same cigarettes and drink six-packs of Coors Light behind the General Store and cause all sorts of trouble. But I can tell something is wrong, because Charlie is white as a ghost, and Charlie is never afraid.
Do you know the way?
Do you know the way?
I will wait for you
Through these storms
Through these shadows
You will find peace
And he says, “Hey Pastor it’s been a long time. Now, I know you know the McFadden family that lives down on Maple Street. Well, their son Jimmy got himself into a wreck tonight, and he didn’t make it, and I’ve got to be the one to go and tell his family that. I just can’t do that by myself. Will you come with me pastor?
Do you know the way?
Do you know the way?
I will wait for you
Through these storms
Through these shadows
You will find peace

Through the Rain
03:01
|
|||
Love protects
I’ll protect you
Through the rain
Through the wind
If you find your heart in trouble
I’ll let you in
I’ll let you in
Love protects
I’ll protect you
My back it is strong
My shoulders are wide
If the rivers start flooding
I can carry you
To the other side
Try to be patient
Try to be kind
Don’t live your life
Like a man who can see
But acts like he’s blind
Love protects
I’ll protect you
Through the rain
Through the wind
I’ll try to be patient
I’ll try to be kind
I don’t want to live my life
Like a man who can see
But acts like he’s blind
Love protects
I’ll protect you
Through the rain
Through the wind

The Party
06:03
|
|||
There’s gonna be a party
It’s gonna have some prostitutes
There’s gonna be some drunken men
All wearing their cowboy boots
There’s gonna be a party
And I hope you can make it too
Get yourself out of jail
There’s an invitation in the mail waiting for you
There’s gonna be a party
Thieves and junkies everywhere
Dancing and a singing
Like a Jubilee at an old county fair
There’s gonna be a party
And I want to see your face there
Get yourself out of jail
There’s an invitation in the mail waiting for you
Get set for the party
It’s gonna be loud and strong
The dead are gonna wake up
And start to sing along
There’s gonna be a party
A place where a crook like me belongs
Get yourself out of jail
There’s an invitation in the mail waiting for you

The End of the World
03:12
|
|||
Saint Pablo drives his taxi down Saint Martin Street
He passes by the Dublin bar with the pretty girl he’d like to meet
He drops some tourists off at a cheap café
It’s that day, it’s that day, like any day, like every day
At the end of the world
The Queen Isabella is the name of a small fishing boat
She passes by ocean liners as they billow out their smoke
Out into the Beagle Channel does she go
It’s that day, it’s that day, like any day, like every day
At the end of the world
The poor just remain poor
The live in their shanty town on the east side of the shore
All the old and wise gather in the town’s costal park
They do some calisthenics and get ready for their walk
They watch the sun break through the clouds in such mysterious ways
It’s that day, it’s that day, like any day, like every day
At the end of the world

I dreamt I met Blind Willie Johnson out in Boston town
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
It was down at the Harbor and he called it, “sacred ground”
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
So, I had a premonition, and said you need to come with me
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
There are places throughout New England Blind Willie you need to see
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
We took the first Greyhound Bus to the great state of Maine
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
We started to fish for men, but the people thought we were insane
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
Let it shine on, let it shine on, let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
Let it shine on, let it shine on, let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
Then we hitchhiked into New Hampshire through its golden valleys
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
I heard Blind Willie cast the White Mountains straight into the sea
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
By the time we reach Vermont, we were both dying of thirst
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
We learned the first shall be last and the last shall be first
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
Let it shine on, let it shine on, let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
Let it shine on, let it shine on, let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
We followed the Connecticut River down its long winding roads
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
All the insurance men in Hartford sure carry a heavy load
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
We walked into the Ocean State where my own mother was born
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
We tried to find rest in Providence, we were both tired and worn
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
Then Blind Willie looked at me and said, “Hey Dan follow in my shoes
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
You need to go throughout New England and proclaim the good news
Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me”
Let it shine on, let it shine on, let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
Let it shine on, let it shine on, let the light from the lighthouse shine on me
